Anne Spencer House and Garden

Anne Spencer was the only black woman and the only Virginian included in the Norton Anthology of Modern American and British Poetry. Part of the Harlem Renaissance, she received international acclaim for her ground-breaking poetry. Grounds include her writing cottage, artifacts, memorabilia and period antique furnishings and are a frequent stop for dignitaries. The house is shown by appointment. The garden, which served as inspiration for much of her poetry, is open without charge.
